Community Youth Theatre

Our CYT projects are designed for young people, aged 13 to 25, who want to be part of an inclusive creative community.

They are a fun way to meet like-minded people, talk about the issues you care about in your community, and most importantly, gain the confidence to be yourself. In this safe environment you can explore the wonderful world of theatre making and find your own artistic expression along the way.

You'll be working with professional theatre makers and local support artists who are eager to share their skills, hear your ideas, and help you make fresh new theatrical works. One week you might be exploring physical theatre techniques, the next devising rap and spoken word: you'll get to experience the full breadth of creative expression and storytelling to find the right form for the stories you want to tell.

In 2020, we've had to start doing things a little differently. We will still be running our three Edge Ensembles: Footscray Edge, St Albans Edge and Wyndham Edge. But to make sure everyone stays safe during the COVID-19 situation, we've had to come up with some new ways of creating and collaborating online. There are now three ways you can get involved.

  • Streaming: we will run live workshops through safe and secure online platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams. We can only support up to 20 young people in the streaming group, so they will need to register to secure their spot.
  • Sending: we will send creative task-based stimulus packages to participants via email (or postal address where necessary) to keep them creative and engaged during the week.
  • Sharing: we will be posting fun and engaging performance-making videos on a secure WEYA YouTube channel made by our Lead Artists and featuring Support Artists.

We are still aiming to bring all three Edge Ensembles together to create and perform a show that will tour the western suburbs in November. We can't wait to see what you all come up with!
